As a child of immigrants, one of the most important lessons I learned was that education can lift a person out of poverty. This was the reason I wanted to become a teacher. As an educator, I would make an impact not just on the learners but on entire families and the generations that follow. These circumstances also inspired in me a love for this country which provides so many opportunities for so many.

I have devoted my life to teaching and counseling students of all ages at the high school, community college, and university levels. At the high school level, I started my career as a Spanish, French, and English as a Second Language teacher then became a counselor. At COC, besides my responsibilities as a general counselor and department chair, I counseled the students in the Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement Program, a support program for students in those fields. In addition, I was involved in leadership and governance positions including member of the College Planning Team, Co-Chair of the Budget Committee, and Academic Senate President. At the university level, I taught courses in the Master's in School Counseling program and followed that experience by earning a Doctor of Education (EdD) degree in Educational and Organizational Leadership. Upon retiring, I was elected to the COC Board of Trustees and continue to serve students and the community in a new capacity. I know I bring a unique perspective having a deep-rooted knowledge of the district.

Having spent a lifetime counseling students about problem-solving, I bring those same skills to the Board when making a decision. What are the issues at hand? What is the goal? What are the action options and possible consequences of each? What are the resources needed including people, finances, emotional support? What is the timeline? What are the signs to recognize the need to reassess? I am a practical problem solver but I am, also, an optimist with enthusiasm for the future. I believe in our students and the self-determination to be the best they can be. I trust the college faculty and staff who bring their education, skills, and experience to the classroom. And I respect the classified employees who work in creative ways and tirelessly to support student learning. COC is an amazing place, not because of the beautiful buildings but because of the people who work there, the students who attend classes, and the community that supports COC.

I am grateful for the support I received from my late husband Charles Armstrong, my family, classified employees and fellow faculty, former high school colleagues, students and their families, friends, and the constituents in this community who continue to support me. My thanks go to all who recognize my love for the college and its mission, and the leadership skills and educational experience I bring to the Board.
